"Fauxfolk" is a short video, recorded during my residency at the Prairie Center of the Arts in Peoria, IL, June of 2012. "Fauxfolk" explores the construction of national, gender, and sexual identities through repetition and playful absurdity. Learning and performing a combination of soccer drills and folk dance steps while dressed in a Hungarian “folk” dress and fancy shoes is an attempt to understand the complex demands of being a good Hungarian queer woman in the US. The piece evokes nostalgia and appreciates the beauty of traditions, while simultaneously exposing the constructed and ridiculous nature of nationalist folk culture through a process of continual negotiations and re-imaginings.
Fauxfolk was screened on May 2nd as part of the 4th Annual Feminist Film Festival in Champaign at The Art Theater and won Best Experimental Film. The event is organized by the Women's Resource Center at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
